The reusable shipping box eBay employees developed last year has won the creative world's equivalent of an Oscar.

The eBay Box earned the Silver CLIO Award in the Packaging category. The annual awards, named for a muse in Greek mythology, recognize excellence in creative industries across a broad range of mediums.

Winning a CLIO is a big honor, says Nicole Purcell, executive director of the CLIO Awards. Submissions go through multiple levels of evaluation, and less than 10 percent of the submissions make it past the first round.

"Making the CLIO Awards shortlist is a massive compliment and achievement for individuals in this evolving industry," she adds.

eBay first introduced the eBay Box at eBay's Innovation Expo last year to encourage sellers to consider the environmental impact of the shipping materials they use. Since that time, eBay has given out more than 100,000 of the reusable boxes, whose idea was developed by members of eBay's Green Team. eBay worked with the San Francisco-based company Office to develop the graphic "identity" of the box.

"We wanted to create a personality for the box, and the program, that would make people take notice of it and want to join in the fun," says Jill Robertson, president of Office. "It was great to see how invested eBay was in the design and process. The eBay Box is a real tribute to the company's commitment to sustainability."

eBay says that if each of the boxes gets reused at least five times, nearly 4,000 trees would be protected and 2.4 million gallons of water would be conserved.

"Talk about a sustainable solution!" says Amy Skoczlas-Cole, director of Sustainability and the eBay Green Team.
