How to Add a Custom Domain Name

Back to Help

Your Auctiva Emporium and Auctiva Commerce Store (if you have this type of store) can be set up with your own personalized domain name. In this tutorial, we will show you how to add a domain name that you already own to either of these stores.

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is the URL that is entered into an Internet browser to reach your storefront. In the case of an Auctiva Emporium, the default domain name is emporium.auctiva.com/<your username>. The default for an Auctiva Commerce Store is <your username>.auctivacommerce.com. Adding a custom domain will change the domain name in the URL to a personalized domain name that is easy to remember. For example, you could change your domain to mydomainname.com, so long as you own this domain name.

If you haven’t purchased a custom domain name, we recommend that you use the Register a Domain page that will purchase, register and automatically point your custom domain name to your storefront. If you already have your own domain name, we’ll show you how to point it to your store in this tutorial.

How to Add a Domain Name Using GoDaddy.com

If you are using a different domain registrar, see the "How to Add a Domain Name Using a Different Service" section below.

Note: Pay close attention to the instructions, as there is a variation for using subdomain names and a variation depending upon which store type you are using.

Step 1. Log in to GoDaddy.com.

  • Log in to your GoDaddy.com account.
  • Near the top left corner of the browser, click on the "All Products" tab, hover your mouse over the "Domains" menu link and click on the "Domain Management" link.
  • Click on the Domain name you would like to connect to your store. (Don’t select the checkbox. Click on the domain name itself.)
  • A new screen with the details for that domain will load. Find the section labeled "DNS Manager" and click on the link below it titled "Launch" (Figure 1). You will be sent to a non-secure page on GoDaddy's DNS server, so be sure to click on "OK" for any pop-up dialogs that ask you if redirecting to a non-secure page is acceptable.

Figure 1. Click on the "Launch" link.

Step 2. Point your custom domain name to your storefront.

Note: If you want to have your Auctiva Emporium or Auctiva Commerce Store on a subdomain name, immediately skip to Step 3. A subdomain name is used when existing content (e.g., a blog, forum, etc.) should not be disturbed on the domain name. The "store" subdomain is common for this use (e.g., store.mydomainname.com). If you want your store on the main domain name, continue with these instructions.

  • In the A (Host) section, look for the row that has "@" entered in the "Host" column text box (Figure 2.1). Change the "Points To" text box in this row to one of the following IP addresses, depending on the type of store you’re adding to this domain name:
    • Enter "38.102.35.108" (don't use quotation marks) for your Auctiva Emporium. This is the storefront you use for all your active eBay listings.
    • Enter "38.102.35.19" (don’t use quotation marks) for your Auctiva Commerce Store if you have this type of store. This is your off-eBay store that has your own inventory.
  • Click on the Save Zone File button at the top or bottom of the screen. It may take up to 72 hours before your custom domain name points to your storefront.
  • You may skip Step 3 and move on to Step 4.

Figure 2.1. Enter the appropriate IP address in the "Points To" column. In this example, we chose the IP address for the Auctiva Commerce Store.

Step 3. Point your subdomain name to your site.

Note: This step is for using a subdomain name (e.g., store.mydomainname.com).

  • Click on the "Add Record" icon in the upper-left corner of the A (Host) section (Figure 3.1). A pop-up window will appear.
  • Select "A (Host)" from the Record Type drop-down menu.
  • Enter the subdomain name you wish to use in the "Host Name:" field (Figure 3.2-A).
  • Enter one of the following IP addresses in the "Points to IP Address" field (Figure 3.2-B) depending on which storefront type you will be using with this subdomain name:
    • Enter "38.102.35.108" (don't use quotation marks) for your Auctiva Emporium. This is the site you use for all your active eBay listings.
    • Enter "38.102.35.19" (don’t use quotation marks) for your Auctiva Commerce Store if you have this type of store. This is your off-eBay store that has your own inventory.
  • Click on the OK button, then click on the Save Zone File button at the top or bottom of the screen. It may take up to 72 hours before your subdomain name points to your store.

Figure 3.1. Click on the "Add Record" icon to create a subdomain name.

Figure 3.2. Enter your desired subdomain (A). Then enter the appropriate IP address (B). In this example, we have chosen the "store" subdomain (e.g., store.mydomainname.com) and the IP address for the Auctiva Commerce Store.

Step 4. Add your domain name to your Auctiva Emporium or Auctiva Commerce Store.*

*If you created an Auctiva Commerce Store after April 3, 2012, this procedure has changed. Please click here for more information on how to set up your custom domain.
  • Hover your mouse over the Stores tab and click on the "Domains" link.
  • Click on the "Configure an Existing Domain" link.
  • The Domain Configuration Wizard will appear in a pop-up window. Click on the "I have a domain that I want to configure for my Auctiva Commerce store" link.
  • Choose the Auctiva Emporium or the Auctiva Commerce Store option.
  • Enter your domain name.
  • Continue following the wizard's instructions according to your preferences until you have completed it.

How to Add a Domain Name Using a Different Service

If your domain name is registered with a different registrar, we recommend you contact the registrar’s support staff and have them configure this for you. More experienced users may be able to figure it out on their own. You can find the pertinent settings within each of the following setup variations below. Please pay careful attention to each scenario. They are different depending on whether you are adding a domain or subdomain, and whether you are using an Auctiva Emporium or Auctiva Commerce Store.

Setup for your Auctiva Emporium

Send either of these messages to your registrar’s support staff depending on whether you are using the domain or a subdomain. A subdomain name is used when existing content (e.g., a blog, forum, etc.) should not be disturbed on the domain name. The "store" subdomain is common for this use (e.g., store.mydomainname.com).

Make sure to edit the messages and insert your domain name information where you see an insert tag.

  • For domain: "I would like the host records for <insert your domain name here> to point to 38.102.35.108 using an A record."
  • For subdomain: "I would like the host records for a subdomain on <insert your domain name here> to point to 38.102.35.108 using an A record. The subdomain I would like to use is <insert subdomain here>."

Setup for your Auctiva Commerce Store

Send either of these messages to your registrar’s support staff depending on whether you are using the domain or a subdomain. A subdomain name is used when existing content (e.g., a blog, forum, etc.) should not be disturbed on the domain name. The "store" subdomain is common for this use (e.g., store.mydomainname.com).

Make sure to edit the messages and insert your domain name information where you see an insert tag.

  • For domain: "I would like the host records for <insert your domain name here> to point to 38.102.35.19 using an A record."
  • For subdomain: "I would like the host records for a subdomain on <insert your domain name here> to point to 38.102.35.19 using an A record. The subdomain I would like to use is <insert subdomain here>."

This completes the task of adding a domain name to your store.
