A bonsai mica pot is a type of training pot developed about 15 years ago by some bonsaiists in Hawaii. They were looking for a strong, durable, good looking bonsai training pot that was better than plastic, but not as expensive as the pottery type. They experimented with plastics, and earth products and came up with a formula that was 85% mineral mica mixed with 10% recycled polyethelene and 5% graphite. The graphite worked to add color and also acted as a mold releasing agent. The had to shop around to find someone to manufacture them to their specifications and went to Korea. There are about 30 styles available in various sizes. The idea caught on here in the U.S. with bonsai artists and now many thousands are sold each year, usually by mail order. We sell many of the most commonly used ones in our mailorder store.
