Have you ever heard of the old story, "The Three Little Pigs"? This is Activision's rendition of that exact story. There are three styles of game play. One is you vs the computer. The difficulty switches in this game make a huge difference in how it's played. When selecting difficulty A, the player must drop each block by walking toward where it will be dropped. In selecting difficulty B, your player can just pick up a block and press the button. The block will automatically be placed in the opening that is available. There are three colors of houses to defend. One house is for each of the three little pigs. The first being yellow since it's made of straw, the second being brown since it's made of sticks, and finally the third being red because it's made of bricks. All are actually made of bricks in the game. The color is the only noticeable difference. Your objective is to drop blocks where the wolf has blown openings in your structure. Each time the wolf huffs and puffs, his breath makes another opening appear in the base of your house. You have a row of 13 blocks stored in the upper part of your house. Use these blocks to fill in each of the openings that the wolf has created in your structure. As you use these blocks, you'll notice that there will be gaps in the area where you can grab them. These blocks will not be replaced until you have used all of the blocks that are currently shown. If you collide with the wolf's breath stream you will be temporarily frozen and then regain your movement again when you reach the base of the structure. At this level the pattern is the same, so get used to the repetition of the dropping of the bombs and pray for a good paddle controller and an easy pattern to catch as this game is quite unforgiving. When you do miss a bomb "and everyone does", all of the bombs on the screen will explode and you will lose one bucket from the bottom. But do not worry as you can always earn another bucket, as it is replaced at each 1000 points that you score. There is a max of three buckets that you can use while playing. And none are kept in reserve ever. When you lose a bucket your difficulty level is reduced by one level. You must catch 1/2 as many bombs from the previous difficulty level and then return to the current level again. If you lose all three of your buckets, the game ends and the score that is displayed is the score that you achieved. As a gaming feature, when scoring 10,000 points, the mad-bomber's face changes. At 999,999 points your score maxes and the game ends. * TIPS Trying the slalom method of movement while playing will give you better accuracy in collecting the falling bombs. I usually stare at the center of the screen as to not be hypnotized by the pattern of the falling bombs, this method helps in seeing the entire screen vs just following the bomb drops. Try not to blink or to move your eyes horizontally following the bomb path, because you will lose sight of the bombs just long enough to lose a bucket. Like another Intellivision game, "Locomotion" Activision's Happy Trails is similar but with a wild west theme, and instead of rails to move on to continue it is trails. The four way directional control of the disc makes your squares go in the direction that you want to guide them. The use of the side buttons, while holding the upper button makes your character move rapidly. By pressing the lower buttons it makes you change your direction of travel. You must slide the squares to enable your character to continue walking as the squares connect for the continual path to collect all the items. You are rewarded with a special money bag at the end of each level when completed, and it gets added with another special money bag for each consecutive level. There will be eight money bags shown in total, and they change color for every nine levels that you achieve. Starting with two by two squares on game one, this first challenge is quite simple. But at the third level you are now four squares wide and two squares high. This also marks the start of having the red sheriff's badge and the appearance of Black Bart. Once you've collected the sheriff's badge, it makes you invincible for a short period of time. While in this invincible mode you are able to capture Black Bart. Doing this gets you a 2x multiplier (double points) of what is remaining on your bonus counter. Your bonus counter starts from 500 and decreases as you play. Once the counter reaches below 100 you will hear a whooping or warning sound that alerts you to hurry up or you will lose a life. Keep in mind that the 500 bonus counter is equal to one minute and ten seconds, so you don't have much time to complete your task. There are 8 game levels with a one player and two player mode, each alternating levels in two player mode. There are money bags to collect along the way. These money bags add to your total points. The level is completed once you've collected all money bags and completed your path without losing a life. Looking at the set of trail blocks for each level, it is clear to see how you have to manipulate your trail blocks to make a continual path of travel. But be careful because as you change the position of the trail blocks, you could end up giving yourself a dead-end in which you will have to rapidly reverse your direction while changing your direction of travel paths. **Tips: You can trap Black Bart into a corner by moving your trail blocks around so that he is either going in a circle or on a dead end path. Pressing your controller forward makes you fly upward and or float depending on how long you press forward. Moving your controller left or right makes H.E.R.O run/fly in that direction. You press the fire button to shoot a laser beam to kill your enemies and shoot through walls. You start your game with 3 lives in reserve, but beware of the power meter that decreases as soon as you start each level. If you do lose a life you will reappear right where you lost it. This makes the game much easier, as so many other games make you start from the beginning of the whole level or some other check point. You have a set number of sticks of dynamite that you can use to blow up obstacles that are in your way, so you can continue your journey through the game. There are also a number of enemies that block your path, which you must shoot, such as bats, snakes, and spiders. As the game progresses, so does the speed of your enemies. You can also use your sticks of dynamite to blow up walls that block you, but be careful because if you do not move away after you've set your dynamite down you will lose a life. Beginning with level five in the game, certain walls won't be stone any longer. They will be made of glowing magma. Do not touch them as you will lose a life. You can also use a stick of dynamite to blow up the magma. Certain magma walls on the higher levels will open and close, so timing is of great importance when trying to fly between them. The word PRO does not appear in game selection five, nor do the level numbers, since all levels on this game selection are random. The next three game numbers have bridges that you must cross as a part of the race track difficulty, and are also longer in distance. There is no warning on when these bridges will appear, other than the precursor of a grouping of more than one oil slick together. So it's in your best interest to be prepared to be in the center of the track just in case a bridge appears. There is another way to know if you are about to encounter another bridge. If you have collided with any cars through your race close to that bridge, those cars will suddenly slow down. You then know that a bridge is coming shortly after.
