The prolific work included detailed engravings of mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, sea life, and botany. The Naturalist's Miscellany sought to advance the knowledge of natural life. It is considered one of the best natural history works of its time. Drawings and descriptions were gathered from explorers and scientists from all over for this expansive work. The work had a particular focus on the fauna and flora of Australia, New Zealand, and the South Seas. Many new, interesting animals were discovered in this period. Each engraving is printed on J Whatman paper. Some of the plates exhibit the Whatman watermark as well. Each plate features beautiful hand-coloring. George Shaw was the author of The Naturalist's Miscellany. He wrote the descriptive text in both English and Latin. Shaw was a doctor, Fellow of the Royal Society, co-founder of the Linnean Society, and a zoologist of the British Museum. He was also the first to publish a scientific description of the platypus which was done in this work. Frederick Nodder illustrated this beautiful work. Nodder was the favored botanical artist of Queen Charlotte. His son, Ralph Nodder, also contributed to the engravings. Frederick's wife, Elizabeth, contributed to the text later in the publication as well.
