A special thanks to Kelley Hinman, Great Grandson of W.L. Whitnell of Murray, Kentucky for all of his hard work in rescuing so many historical treasures. We had the great pleasure of meeting Kelly when he presented us with the opportunity to purchase some of the architectural components of his Great Grandfather’s home. According to Kelley, The Home was built by his Great Grandfather, W.L. Whitnell in 1898. Whitnell was involved in the founding of Murray State University, Owned a Store in Downtown Murray and dealt mainly in Tobacco Trading and Thoroughbred Horses. He raised eleven children in the house. His eldest daughter Mayme Whitnell was born there and lived in the house until her death in 1992. She was one of the first Graduates of Murray State University and was instrumental in the foundation of the School’s Library where she served as the head librarian. Miss Whitnell never married, and she worked at the school from 1935-1960. She never learned to drive and walked to work every day. The lumber used to build the home consisted of virgin timbers that were logged right there on the property at 500 S. 12th Street in Murray, Kentucky. Framed in Oak and Poplar, the Home was adorned with a myriad of stunning wood components and accents, most of which were rescued by Kelly and crew in 2003, when the Home was dismantled. Among the treasures recovered from the project are Doors, Floors, Baseboards, Rosettes, a Fireplace Mantel, Newel posts and much more. Although we did not obtain all of what Mr. Hinman had to offer, we chose a nice variety of items that, I am sure, will find new homes to adorn. Upon his return to Asheville, Kelley e-mailed us to let us know that he donated the glass windows to local artists and the piano to Habitat for Humanity. Thanks again Kelley!
