Spring Season Holidays & Children

The Spring Season and September holidays are approaching fast. Fashion is on the move as the weather warms up, change is in the offing. Families are on the move as the finishing touches to travel plans are made, packing lists are created and luggage is given a dust over. Children are excited, parents are either bracing themselves for the 'Are we there yet' whine or embracing the fun with or with out several glasses of wines. It is all great fun as the gloomy winter passes. Are we ready for the holidays? Are we ever prepared for the holiday season? My level of readiness is totally shameful. Because my slovenly lazy ways have proved themselves dangerously useless in the past. I have had to formulate a trick or two to save my super lazy, super mum reputation from hitting the tabloids. Following a potential holiday disaster and front page spread of the ‘lousy mother neglects children type’, I arrived at a clever plan. Let us return to our worst family holiday experience so far. We holidayed in a remote area and of course my son, who was just on three at the time, became ill. And of course it was during the night. And of course it was the one time I did not pack any panadol, nurofen or medications at all. I was the harebrain, the numbskull, the everything lousy and useless to have around when organization is of the upmost importance. However I was also the one coping with scant provisions in a small emergency. My son’s temperature was rising and all I was able to do was disrobe him and mop his forehead with a luke warm sponge, to which I was lucky enough to have packed. Like most sick children, he was distressed, disgruntled and restless. Needless to say so was the rest of the family, plus an anxious and guilt laden Mum to boot. It really was one of those situations full of ‘if only scenarios’ in between ‘is it too early to call an ambulance?’ Fortunately my son survived his illness but the holiday really didn't. We cut it short. Holiday homes & remote villages with no pubs, little provisions and wet weather do not couple well with ill toddlers and sleep deprived parents. Nowadays the best way I have found to make this not happen again is to have a medication pack that is ready to go at the drop of a hat. I have a larger size toilet bag that has its own supply of small bottles of Nurofen, Panadol, and Claratyne (because my son is allergic to European Wasps), medicine dispensers, some first aid stuff and any other medications that are useful to have around just incase. As this is a separate pouch to the family medical cabinet, I am selective about what I put in, after all we are travelling and do not want the house coming with us. For any family that has weekends away or is lucky enough to be frequent travelers I highly recommend creating your own travel medicine kit like this. It is so handy just to grab and go. Do not forget if you are heading off to beach and holiday resorts you may need to restock kid’s sandals, thongs, crocks and aqua socks for rock pool exploration. I have a few of these items listed in stock at my eBay store plus some other spring/summer items available. But they are going fast as the holidays approach.
