Why are my 14K gold earrings so flimsy?

Gold has always been expensive (currently at the all-time high price of more than $1100 per ounce).  To keep the price down, manufacturers reduce the weight, often by making their pieces hollow rather than solid.

Weight is one way to make an educated guess about whether an unmarked piece is gold or not.  The heavier the unmarked piece, the less likely that it is gold.
