Hello and welcome to my guide on the function of the pulse oximeter monitor, its effective use in the home environment, and an helpful tip on how to create effective breathing, and maximum airflow to ensure you achieve a better quality of life. I have had ten years of Nursing experience , and presently working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, where my scope of practice is educating and empowering patients in creating independence of care and teaching each patient to become informed about their own health. Many patients with copd have developed ineffective coughing patterns that do not adequately clear their airways. Huff coughing is an effective technique that the patient can be taught easily. The main goals of effective coughing are to conserve energy, reduce fatigue and facilitate the removal of secretions. One of the most effective guidelines for effective coughing is to take a deep abdominal breath, bend slightly forward, and then huff cough( coughing three of four times on exhalation). Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method of continuously monitoring the oxygen saturation of haemoglobin. Although pulse oximetry does not replace arterial blood gases, it is an effective tool to monitor the patient for subtle or sudden changes in oxygen saturation. It is used in a variety of settings , including critical care units, general nursing units, and in diagnostic and treatment areas when there is a need to monitor the patients oxygenation during procedures. However, there is a wider scope of practice for finger pulse oximeter monitors in the community in areas such as home health care spot checking for patients with conditions such as Asthma, Copd, Sleep apnea study,Emphysema, and Chronic Bronchitis. The CMS-50E oled fingertip pulse oximeter features next generation design with powerful technology to meaure oxygen saturation and pulse rate through your finger. The oximeter will alarm (auditory and visual) if the oximeter is not correctly in place on the finger, if the voltage is too low, and most importantly , if it measures beyond set limits. This also has the ability to store 24 hours worth of data! Readings can be uploaded to your computer easily using the free software that is included with the device. The function of the oximeter works by placing your finger into the rubber opening that has a sensor. This sensor detects changes in oxygen saturation levels by monitoring light signals generated by the oximeter and reflected by blood pulsing through the tissue at the probe. Normal values are 95%-100%. Values below 85% indicate that the tissues are not receiving enough oxygen and the patient needs further evaluation. The cms 50E has the ability to store 24 hours worth of data, however, all measurements should be analysed with a physician or medical professional. Our company, GLOBAL HEALTH aims to consistently provide the highest level of customer care by researching and sourcing the highest quality products at a reasonable cost , to ensure you can maintain the ultimate gift of life: Optimum Health. The accessory muscles of breathing in the neck and upper part of the chest are used excessively with a copd patient to promote chest wall movement. However, these muscles are not designed for long term use and as a result the patient experiences fatigue.
