SELLING A LIFETIME COLLECTION OF OLD BOOKS MAPS AND PRINTS VINTAGE PRINT 75 YEARS OLD ENGLISH HISTORY SIR WALTER'S SERVANT MAKES AN UNFORTUNATE MISTAKE About this print (1937) Smokers have cause to bless the name of Sir Walter Raleigh who, having been introduced to tobacco by Sir Francis Drake and Ralph Lane, the first governor of Virginia, became such an ardent adherent of the "'holy herb " that the Elizabethan courtiers followed his example and tobacco came to England to stay. The story goes, however, that Raleigh's servant, coming upon his master one day indulging in a quiet pipe, believed him to be on fire and, rushing out, seized a pail of water and flung it over the unconscious smoker.
