FOR SALE at gunbroker.com-
Portuguese Lantaka Rail SOLID BRONZE Cannon from c1600-1700's. Museum Quality- Outstanding lantaka style rail swivel cannon, made & used by the Portuguese. Spain & Portugal ruled the seas during this period & sometimes traded these cannons to Indonesia. That is why you will see them in Malaysia, Borneo etc. However the governments of these countries have now made it against the law to sell them off of the islands. These cannons were used on Wind Sail sailing ships of the 1600-1700's. They were posted all along both sides of the ship on the rails. Pirates also used these beautiful cannons. Used on land as well as on the waters, these cannons would be derailed from the ships railing and carried on to land as portable weaponry. They differ in size, some are so small they will fit in the palm of your hand, others so large they have to be towed on wooden stands. All are very beautiful, most are not as detailed as this one with the octagon starburst end & the solid dolphin handles, which is what all collectors are looking for. Weight is 47 lbs. Length is 37" 1 inch bore. They had a wooden rudder at the end to swivel them, which is gone from this one as 99% are. We put a broom stick in the handle for the pictures. This cannon is shootable & has a clean bore however we do not advise this. ** There are 2 X's carved on the side? Wonder if they mark at hit or what? It has incredible decoration, diamonds around & up & down it, vines & swirls, sea horse or dolphin site/ handles, large site in front on sunburst muzzle. Acanthas leaf decoration in back by rudder handle. 2 rear sites. More pictures on request and use the telephone # provided or email through gunbroker with questions. Shipping will be about $65.00 as an estimate but will discuss after sale with winning customer. IT CAN BE SEEN AT- see at 917 10th st. Modesto, Ca.
