Hearing amplifiers have come a long way in the last few months. There are now many models that have rechargeable batteries, eliminating the need to continually purchase batteries. They come with chargers that plug into the wall and some even into your computer as well. Some are very sophisticated and can be adjusted to fit individual needs. They also are much smaller and harder to detect. They come in both Behind the Ear (BTE) and In the Ear (ITE).
