Outboards... First and foremost you must make sure to flush your engine with clean water. You can either use a flushing attachment or a large bucket to do this. While the engine is running you want to make sure that you disconnect the fuel lines and let the engine run itself out of gas. This prevents the fuel from gumming up the fuel system and creating issues in the spring. Before you run the motor completely out of a fuel you want to make sure to run fogging oil through the system. You can do this by spraying it directly into the carb. or attaching an injection can to the fuel system. Fogging oil is an anticorrosive spray that coats the inside of the cylinder walls and prevents corrosion. Remember corrosion does not stop like boaters do during the winter months. Make sure to then tilt the motor down so that all water drains out of the motor. Make sure to crank the motor over once or twice to empty out the waterpump. Also consult your owner's manual to see if your block has any draining If your motor has a computer disconnect the inlet hose on the top of the computer and run a little antifreeze through it until it runs out by the ride plate, this prevents any water build up from freezing the computer. When all the water is cleaned from the motor. Remove the spark plugs and spray fogging oil directly into the cylinders. Hand turn the flywheel to make sure that the fogging oil completely coats the cylinder walls. Also, this is a great time to inspect the spark plugs and replace them if necessry. Another important piece of winterization is making sure to grease all of the pivot points and zirk fittings on the motor. Consult your owner's manual for the location of these points and make sure to use a marie grade lubrication. While the grease is out make sure to remove the propellor and heavily coat the propellor shaft so the prop does not freeze to it. You also want to make sure to completely drain and refill your motor's gearcase. This will prevent any water that may have entered your gearcase from causing problems, it also readies the motor for spring use. Lastly you want to mist your entire powerhead with anti-corrosion spray. Add stabilizer to your fuel, and leave the engine stored all winter long in an upright position.
