It all began with a Yearbook of Agriculture from 1936 that I happened to see on the dollar racks outside of the Strand one spring evening. I'm sucker for old books and the pages of this "yearbook" were beautiful--crisp, ornate, delicate. I thought the simple charts and lists would make an interesting graphic filler of some homemade books I'd dreamed up. Yet in the process of slicing out the yearbook's pages, I began to read the names of plants and flowers. The coupling of odd syllables and words transformed into a mysterious agricultural poetry that has remained in my head ever since. The name Sacaton June itself seems hazy, humid, red and blossoming, like a great field of swaying poppies. Is it a flower? A girl? An entire month's sentiment?
