I recommend you get a beginner book Like "Easy Tatting" OR "Learn Tatting with Lacet Publications". Then play around with a piece of yarn and your fingers to make the double stitch.
The "Flip" as it is called is the hardest part to learn. So don't give up. My mom taught me to tat, by tying a piece of yarn on a chair and had me practice the double stitch on that. It took a long time before I could make the double stitch "Flip", so my knots would slip. This is important in making rings.
