I recommend you get a beginner book Like "Easy Tatting" OR "Learn Tatting with Lacet Publications". Then play around with a piece of yarn and your fingers to make the double stitch. The "Flip" as it is called is the hardest part to learn. So don't give up. My mom taught me to tat, by tying a piece of yarn on a chair and had me practice the double stitch on that. It took a long time before I could make the double stitch "Flip", so my knots would slip. This is important in making rings.

Mary Maxim has 4 wonderful christmas stocking pattern books. The designs are knitting into the stocking as you go. They has Mr & Mrs Claus, Reindeer, snowman, poinsetta. Over 40 designs in all 4 books. The pattern calls for 1 skein for background and several small portions to create the designs. It also calls for size 8 knitting needles.
