Ever thought about growing Australian natives from seed and always been told that it is to hard or impossible? The truth is Aussie natives are no harder to germinate from seed than any other plant, given a few exceptions, but you get that even with other plants. There are but a few simple rules to success, but when you think about it that is the same with every seed you plant being native or exotic. Eucalyptus, don't plant them to deep, keep them moist but not waterlogged, and depending on the speices you should start to see germination with in a few days to a couple of weeks. Eucalyptus , hugh un-attractive tree. You could not be so far from the truth, with hunderds of different speices and sub speices there is an amazing range to suit almost any position. Big starts with trees like EUCALYPTUS jacksonii "Red Tingle" 75m,of course this does not grow this size overnight and can take hunderds of years and really only suited if you have a large area. EUCALYPTUS macocarpa "rose of the west",EUCALYPTUS YOUNGIANA-ooldea mallee are ideal for small gardens growing only a few metres in hieght, bird atracting and the flowers that you would only expect from exotics. All Eucalypt's flower but with the larger trees the flowers are often to high to appreciate but with the lower growing trees there such a range of flowers that often cover the whole tree in a mass of colour. ACACIA, another wonderful flowering plant that comes in many sizes from ground covers to big tree of 30m. The secert to growing Acacia from seed is also really quite simple, as with a lot of Australian plant seeds they have a vet hard coating that requires one of two tricks to break the dormancy, these seed can stay viable for years until that dormancy is broken. The simpliest way to do this is by pouring near boiling water over the seed and let it sit for 12-24 hours, the other method which is Ok for larger seed is to break the coating by rubbing it with fine sandpaper, with smaller seed it is much easier using the first method. Other seed that respond to this treament include, Oxylobium, Swainsona,Daviesia,Pulentenaea to name but a few. I will be discussing differnt seed again in the near future so keep coming back if your interested or you can email me [email protected] I'm always willing to help where I can. Want to try some seed?
