Tobacco Germination Tips Do not cover tobacco seeds with soil. They need daylight to germinate. Provide a place near a window or light from an All-Spectrum electrical source. Always keep the soil moist but not wet. The seeds will die if they dry out. You may need to check the soil for moisture several times during the day, until the seeds have germinated. A good temperature to germinate tobacco seeds is about 75 - 80 degrees F. Germination can begin already after three days. Longer (up to 9 days) under imperfect conditions. A good soil to germinate and grow tobacco is composted cow manure or tomato planting soil. Tobacco seeds can be stored in a freezer to keep their viability for many years. Acclimatize them to room temperature for two weeks before seeding. If you want your tobacco plants to develop more seeds, then planting some catnip herbs nearby is advisable.
