  • The Addiction of making Lampwork Beads

Anyone who's ever read a Lampworking Artist or two's biography is sure to have heard expressions like, "I'm addicted to making beads" or "I get to my torch as often as I can," but until I took my first Lampwork Class and started making my own original beads, (believe me the first one's were indeed original and thats putting it nicely),I didn't really understand the gravity of those statements. This form of creating art for me, seems to be, what all of the other forms of my attempted creativity, be it the sculpture and design and still life sketching classes I took in college, the quilting, the undeniable urge to "hot glue" jewels on everything in the house, the scrutiny over my son's projects when he was in middle school, and even my first attempt at the age of six to make something recognizable with Popsicle sticks, were all leading up to. I set my sights on owning my own kiln from the start. It was clear to me that this new "Hobby" was not going to be short lived. Dare I confess that I've actually dreamed of new ideas for beads. So, I guess the point of my rambling here is this. . . If you hear someone say they're addicted, believe them. They aren't in denial and they don't need a 12 step program. They're, okay Our, only hope is, that you be understanding of our "affliction", that you stand clear when the craving hits us, and the piece de resistance. . . that you like what we come up with!
