Each frame has a series of 3 numbers imprinted either on the inside of the temple, inside the bridge(across the nose piece) or in a plastic frame it is sometimes stamped on the nose piece. These numbers are always in millimeters so we can get a more accurate measurement, since we are measuring a very small area. The numbers are usually written as: 49-19-135 1. The first number is the distance across one lens ( does not include the frame) 2.The second number is the distance across the bridge or sometimes refered to as the DBL(distance between lenses) 3.The third number is the length of the temple(arm piece) from the front of the frame to the end of the temple, which goes behind the ear. If you are looking for a frame on Ebay and you already wear glasses, I would suggest you check the numbers in your exsisting frame and and find a frame with similar sizes on Ebay. The other thing you can do is go to an optical store, try on some frames and copy down the size of the frame that is most comfortable. This would be the set of 3 numbers we talked about above. Here are some of the frame terms you may hear when being fitted for a new pair of eyeglasses: Frame front: Front part of the eyeglass frame that holds the lenses in place and bridges the top of the nose. Eye wires (rims): Part of the frame front into which the lenses are inserted. Bridge: The area between the lenses that goes over the nose and supports 90 percent of the weight of the eyeglasses. End pieces: Extensions of the frame front to which the temples are attached. Hinges: Part of the frame that connects the frame front to the temples and allows the temples to swing. Temples: Parts of the frame that extend over and/or behind the ears to help hold the frame in place. * Spring-hinged temples include hidden springs in the hinges that help keep the frame from slipping. They help keep the frame in its proper position. Temple tips: Plastic coatings that often cover the ends of the temples behind and/or over the ears. Sizes may also be stamped on the inside of the bridge, or embedded into the nose piece of a plastic frame. Sizes include the “eye size”, which is the width of each lens in millimeters, and the bridge size, or distance between lenses. This number will appear as 52-15 or 47-21. The first number indicates the width of one lens and the second number indicates the distance between lenses or bridge size. Often times a small box may appear between the lens width and the bridge width. A number for temple length will also be indicated on your eyeglass frame. This number represents the length of each temple in millimeters such as 135 or 145.
