What is it and how does it work?

Vermicomposting simply means composting with worms. Worms will eat kitchen scraps shredded newspaper and junk mail, grass clippings, brown leaves and almost any type of organic matter you have that you don't want to throw in the landfill. The most typical worm for a compost bin is the Red Wriggler. They are the most versatile and will breed readily under proper conditions.

Vermicomposting bins come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so you have to decide which is best for you. You also should decide if you will keep the bin inside our outside and consider the weather conditions when making that decision. The bins are ventilated to allow air flow so your bins are not too hot or too moist. Excess moisture is drained to the waste pan at the bottom of the bin where there is usually a spigot to drain and us the valuable "compost tea" or "worm tea". You will use this to water/fertilize your flowers, shrubs, trees and vegetables.

The most successful and easy-to-use worm composters are those that offer an upward migration system where the worms can eat food in one tray, and migrate up to the tray above, which should be filled with food and bedding.

Once the worms have moved to the tray above, you can harvest what they left behind which is an abundance of worm castings or worm poop. The castings that are left behind is a rich, nutrient dense organic matter that you can use to enrich soil, fertilize your plants, or make compost tea to water and fertilize your plants at the same time.
