Aino Aalto’s bold principles live on in the Aino Aalto glassware collection. Her fresh creations continue to provide simple pleasure to young and old the world over. This contemporary glassware, which today comes in different colors, can be combined with every object that Iittala produces, and sits comfortably in any scenario. Born Aino Marsio (1894-1949), she married esteemed architect and glass designer Alvar Aalto in 1924. She won the 1932 iittala-Karhula design competition in Finland and the gold prize at the Milan Triennale in 1936 for her functionalist glassware collection. Aino Aalto’s namesake design is Iittala’s oldest product and stands for the epitome of mindmade design. Aino Aalto fought habit by challenging people to accept radically new lines and forms that still fulfilled the same needs. Her design philosophy clashed with her times. Many wanted to hang on to their traditions. Fortunately, certain people appreciated Aino’s insight and supported her and her colleagues, as they revolutionized Finnish design. Aino Aalto’s glassware and dinnerware are the first glass products intentionally designed with everyday use in mind, yet adaptable for modern production methods. Developed in the true spirit of functionalism, Aino Aalto’s glassware is so simple and timeless in form it is no surprise it still graces tables around the world 70 years later.

Franciscan China Franciscan China, which was produced originally as earthenware in 1934, was decorated with beautiful glazes in many brilliant styles, and began in china production in 1942. Produced at the Glendale plant in California, its name “Franciscan” was chosen by the china company, which had started to operate as the Pacific Art Title Company, to pay homage to California.

The Glendale plant, located in Los Angeles, was founded by Charles Gladding, Peter McGill McBean, and George Chambers in 1875 when they established Gladden-McBean & Company. The first plant was in Placer County, California before it was combined with the Los Angeles Pressed Brick Company which then allowed them to expand and establish plants in places such as Glendale, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and Alberhill.

About a half century later, due to low sales volume, the Gladden-McBean company had to sell its Franciscan China division to the Lock Joint Pipe Company, which resulted in the establishment of the International Pipe and Ceramics Corporation. Later it became just the Interpace Corporation.

In 1979 Franciscan China ceramics was sold to Josiah Wedgwood and Sons, Ltd. In 1984, when the facility closed, the production was moved entirely to England.

DishFunctional sells china, crystal and flatware to the aftermarket. Franciscan products are still highly desirable and are part of the Dishfun store’s selected listings.

I have found that the Villeroy & Boch Basket pattern to be durable and beautiful. One key factor in desirability in dinnerware is how it looks with food on the plate. Any pattern could look good in and of itself, but seeing it on the table is the end all be all. I have to admit that Basket, by Villeroy & Boch, is not only a durable pattern but an attractive one as well.
