Jim Duff~ Early River Gallery. My Stores Logo About This Piece: Collectors of Daniel Smith’s Fine Art Editions are already familiar with his astonishing versatility. This artist is not gathering moss painting the same one or two species. He is equally at home painting bear in water as he is a thundering herd of buffalo or a mountain lion poised to leap. The subject of Summit Sanctuary is the Dall sheep in a perfect alpine landscape that shows the high elevation these mountaineers prefer. The Dall sheep inhabit the subarctic mountain ranges of Alaska and the Canadian northwest and their adaptation to this rugged high country environment has ensured their survival for thousands of years. Storm clouds may gather on the ridge top but this group of three relaxes in a spot of sun, taking in what must be an expansive view below. About The Artist: Daniel Smith, one of America’s foremost wildlife artists, enjoys wide acclaim for his depictions of the natural world. He is inspired by his surroundings in southwest Montana and paints from personal experience. He also has had a lifetime fascination with Africa and travels there frequently seeking artistic inspiration. Daniel has been painting fulltime for over twenty years. His works are in the permanent collection of The Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and The Wildlife Experience. Daniel participates annually in the Masters of the American West exhibit at the Autry National Center and the Western Visions exhibit at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. He has wonnumerous awards from The Society of Animal Artists as well as being chosen as “Artist of the Year” for several conservation organizations. Throughout his career Smith has used his art to aid and endorse manyconservation efforts. He feels indebted to the natural world that has been the sole inspiration for his award winning career. • June Carey The Harvest Giclee Canvas New

    12:32 PM PST, 2/27/2009

June Carey The Harvest Giclee Canvas New With The Harvest, artist June Carey returns to the location of her sell-out fine art edition Lost in a View. Inspired by the hills surrounding Florence and the Castello di Verrazzano Chianti region, the painting marks the warm fall days of the Tuscan grape harvest in late September and early October. Working farmers of all ages, men and women wearing their long aprons, gather at the edge of the field, laughing, talking and sometimes singing. They then go out with great purpose and energy, carrying their red buckets through the seasoned vines which are heavy with deep blue clusters of grapes. Cypress trees surround the ancient walls of the buildings that mark the home of wine cellars since the twelfth century. “I bought one of the red grape harvest buckets to use as a prop in the paintings. At the vineyard, the workers eyed my camera with suspicion and curiosity. I held it up and yelled ‘Artista di California. E' bello!’ They laughed among themselves and went back to the harvest. The little farmhouse in Pennsylvania where I grew up was always alive with singing, laughter and a love of the arts. My father, a voice instructor, introduced us to the steady flow of eccentric, larger-than-life characters found in his greatest passion – the dramatic world of the Italian opera. Aida’s rich theme always seemed to be playing in the background as I went in search of a reality I could call my own, escaping into the quiet roar of the singing crickets and song of the meadowlark. I could lose myself in the turquoise twilight magic of a summer evening or breath of sweet fields of winter wheat beneath the rising sliver of a moon. I found my true love and years later found myself longing for the beautiful fields of my childhood, where everything was the way it should be. My passion springs forth through the beauty of the fertile earth, which has always been my real teacher. I began painting full time in 1982, doing my time as a starving artist while raising my young son. I was happy to trade this tragic cliché for the happy success of sell-out gallery shows and award banquets. In 1991, I married maritime artist David Thimgan, and we thrived together. On one late summer afternoon escape, traveling to the Mendocino coast, I discovered the California wine country. I was so happy to have found a place in California that reminded me of my long lost fields of Pennsylvania. I painted my first vineyard scene in 1996 and, as time passed, this interest has taken me to the countryside of Tuscany, where I feel I probably lived in a former lifetime. My Italian opera theme song has never left my heart, and somehow life seems to have come full circle, to connect, again, the passions of my life. About Early River Gallery: Greetings from Vermont. Jim Duff~ Early River Gallery. My Stores Logo About this piece: The bulk and majesty of a solitary bull (male) moose moves deliberately through a forest of aspen. He appears and disappears as he weaves through the trees in deep snow. The mating season completed, this bull will drop his antlers soon in order to conserve energy for the winter. A new set of antlers will grow in the spring. The moose and the American aspen are native to much of the same North American territory. A Walk in the Woods is an iconic Stephen Lyman image: a spectacular wildlife subject, ensconced in its habitat. “He paints the wilderness with a knowledge and genuineness that can only be expressed by someone who has ‘been there’.” – Bev Doolittle Through Lyman’s art, you can travel into a wilderness very few have experienced. You can share the sensation of being in the true outdoors – exploring, discovering, studying and enjoying the all-encompassing beauty of unspoiled nature. Stephen Lyman was an explorer who specialized in painting the most elusive moments in nature. His inspiring work was inspired, in turn, by the writing and teachings of famous naturalist John Muir. “Muir wrote, ‘Climb the mountains and get their good tidings,’” Lyman said. “I know exactly what he meant.” Lyman’s love of the great outdoors stemmed from a childhood spent in the Pacific Northwest, where hiking in Snake River country was a regular family ritual. Lyman’s desire to share his admiration for the outdoors was strong, but he enrolled in the Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, California, to learn more about the commercial art field. He started his career as a commercial illustrator in Los Angeles and soon realized that the call of the wild was stronger than the lure of the city. Returning to Idaho, he spent two years exploring and developing his own style of painting. He continued to discover the wonders of the natural world and of living a natural lifestyle. “All my paintings have their origins in my experience and perception of beauty in the wilderness,” he said. Lyman’s first limited edition print was published by The Greenwich Workshop in 1983. In subsequent years, he was a frequent participant in the prestigious international “Birds in Art” show at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. He was invited to be “Artist of the Year” at the 1991 Pacific Rim Wildlife Art Show and then received the rare honor of being invited back as an “Encore Artist” at the 1995 event. Stephen Lyman actively shared the wonder of the natural world with a legion of collectors until his untimely death in 1996. He had been recently named one of the top artists in the country by U.S. Art magazine and his book, Into the Wilderness: An Artist’s Journey, was published to unanimous acclaim in the autumn of 1995. Jim Duff~ Early River Gallery. My Stores Logo About This Piece: “Last September I spent seven days backpacking in Yellowstone, which has been a central inspiration for me as an artist,” said artist Bonnie Marris, “but this recent trip was a special gift. I saw so much wildlife and had the joy of camping near the Druid wolf pack for 3 days.” Both the male and female pass time bonding with their pups. There are many Idle Hours with no agenda other than tenderness and play. A wolf’s eyes seem to always have a remote distance, but this mother is in her own world, a place of incredible security, with her two pups. “This is the painting I always wanted to do,” Bonnie said. “I felt somehow completed when it was finished.” Wolves are especially popular among her collectors, too. Previous Fine Art Edition wolf family portraits such as The Ties that Bind and Sing Out are Sold Out at Publisher. About the Artist: Bonnie Marris has taken an unusual path into art; she developed her talent by portraying animals “from the inside out.” While she was a student at Michigan State University, Bonnie illustrated several major books. One volume she worked on was a leading expert’s mammalogy text that contained several hundred drawings and detail studies. This massive project attracted the attention of noted zoologist George Schaller, who invited Bonnie to prepare the art for posters that would support his worldwide rare animal relief programs. Beyond academic training and emotional involvement, art requires another element for which there is no substitute: experience. Each year, Bonnie makes two major trips, and countless smaller ones, to observe and learn about the wildlife she loves. In 1980, one such voyage took her to Alaska, where she lived in the wilderness for six months. She recounts, “To get into a natural environment and see the animals on their own terms is as important as knowing the animals themselves. For instance, gray wolves on the tundra—the vast, vast tundra with the wind and other forces of nature at their most extreme—that’s what makes them what they are. To stand not far from a grizzly that is so overpowering, so beautiful and so large . . . to watch it pull up a small tree with a swipe of its paw and just a few minutes later see it delicately picking blueberries with its black lips. . . Alaska changed me; it gave me the biggest incentive to paint and increased my interest in the predators: the cats, bears, coyotes, wolves and foxes. They exist on so many levels. Their moods show in their eyes and we can learn so much from them.” About Early River Gallery: Greetings from Vermont. See Steve Hanks speak about the inspiration and foundation behind his work at: www.greenwichworkshop.com/video/hanks01.asp Although teachers often cited his artistic ability, Steve Hanks’ main interest while growing up around San Francisco was sports. As a young teenager, Hanks pursued surfing and tennis with passion. He eventually tired of a steady diet of competitive tennis, but continued to surf, finding a spiritual connection with the ocean. “Surfing had a strong influence on my paintings,” he says. “The ocean often appears in my work, because I have such strong feeling for it." Steve Hanks’ paintings are much more than endearing images of women and children. Rather than conveying a specific message through his paintings, Hanks prefers to explore memories and emotions. “All art is an escape to somewhere you want to be or a feeling you want to have," Hanks says. "People see different things in my paintings because we all have different backgrounds and feelings.” Art jurors began recognizing the quality of his work in 1973. Steve Hanks won the Arts for the Parks Marine Art Award of Excellence in 1990 and 1994, and has been one of the Arts for the Parks top 100 artists since 1989. In 1991, Steve Hanks received the National Watercolor Society Merit Award and the National Academy of Western Art awarded him the Gold Medal in 1992. Since 1993, he has been one of U.S. Art Magazine's top ten American artists. When the Pacific Rim show in Seattle, WA decided to open the show up to a wider variety of art in 1999, they selected Steve as Artist of the Year. Steve wasone of five winners selected to the U.S. Art Hall of Fame 2000. He was named as one of the top 25 selling artists in the June, 2002 issue of Decor magazine. Out of the corner of their eye from a hundred yards away, any angler can recognize the lines, body language and adrenaline surge of a hook-up. It is gestalt personified. Nelson Boren’s rise to prominence in the art world has been built upon applying this concept of gestalt to cowboy life. His large format graphics tell whole stories of the durable American icon one intimate slice at a time. So, it was only a matter of time before Nelson’s other great passion emerged in the studio. With his first release on the art of fishing, Nelson presents us with just a fragment of a magic day on a clear cold river. Quickly, the mind flows and we fill in the rest; lunkers cruising just beneath the surface, a furtive boil here and there, shooting lines, the favored creel heavy with success. Reproduced as a Fine Art Giclée on Paper this edition captures all the wonder and presentation of the watercolor original and is sure to disappear as quickly as a tail rise in a favored run. About The Artist: Born and raised in Tempe, Arizona, Nelson studied to be an architect earning a degree from Arizona State University. The Inspiration Growing up in Pensacola, Florida, Denise Sansing was taught by her mother Fran not only to appreciate fine things but also how to make them, and the legacy of that early training is the repertoire of distinctive and elegant designs Denise creates today for her own company. The American Dream Whether trekking through Europe searching out beautiful new fabrics and trims or rollerblading her way through 12-hour days at her company's new manufacturing facility in McAllen, Texas, designer Denise Sansing has parlayed a love for beautiful things, an artist's eye for the unusual and a lot of hard work into the quintessential American Dream. The intricately designed and elegant pillows that have become the hallmark of Sweet Dreams have also become collector's items and long-term investments - truly a prized possession that the discriminating, discerning, demanding customer will treasure for a lifetime - an heirloom to be passed on. Denise likens her creations to the Victorian crazy quilt that was one of the company's first products. "The concept of incorporating all those different fabrics, putting on one's own decorative stitches like a little spider in the corner, along with the date - it's the personal documentation that gives value," she says. Today, with nationwide representation, worldwide sales and new design and production facilities in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, the company is considered by many to set the standard for fine decorative accessories for the home.
