His titles are a key to understanding the deeper message waiting to be discovered in each painting, and, often have more than one meaning. "I believe that art can be more than just pretty pictures. Art should bring comfort to people. It should be by our side when we go through good times and hard times," says Steve Hanks. "Art should elicit a thought provoking examination of one's own life and place in the world." "We all experience pain, but there are great moments of pleasure all around us too. These moments may often be fleeting and get by us before we are able to fully comprehend their beauty and importance. I have tried to capture a few of these moments in paintings that can be savored for years to come." Although teachers often cited his artistic ability, Steve Hanks’ main interest while growing up around San Francisco was sports. As a young teenager, Hanks pursued surfing and tennis with passion. He eventually tired of a steady diet of competitive tennis, but continued to surf, finding a spiritual connection with the ocean. “Surfing had a strong influence on my paintings,” he says. “The ocean often appears in my work, because I have such strong feelings for it.” Although it was apparent early on that he had talent, Hanks refused to do the required assignments in his high school art class and earned a grade of C in the class. “To prove I was good, I did a one-man show at the high school and sold my first painting to another art teacher,” he says. After high school Hanks enrolled in summer session commercial art courses at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. “The only way I could convince my parents to let me go was to say I was going into commercial art,” he says. “I didn’t even know what that was!” He did well in his commercial art classes, but it was a life drawing class that captured his interest. He focused his energy on the study of anatomy and figure drawing and transferred into the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. He graduated in the 1960s with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and then moved back to New Mexico in search of a home art gallery. Steve Hanks’ paintings are much more than endearing images of women and children. Rather than conveying a specific message through his paintings, Hanks prefers to explore memories and emotions. “All art is an escape to somewhere you want to be or a feeling you want to have," Hanks says. "People see different things in my paintings because we all have different backgrounds and feelings.” Art jurors began recognizing the quality of his work in 1973. Steve Hanks won the Arts for the Parks Marine Art Award of Excellence in 1990 and 1994, and has been one of the Arts for the Parks top 100 artists since 1989. In 1991, Steve Hanks received the National Watercolor Society Merit Award and the National Academy of Western Art awarded him the Gold Medal in 1992. Since 1993, he has been one of U.S. Art Magazine's top ten American artists. When the Pacific Rim show in Seattle, WA decided to open the show up to a wider variety of art in 1999, they selected Steve as Artist of the Year. P & A Double Student Lamp Gold Mica Flec Shades 1880's
2:00 PM PST, 6/30/2008
P & A Double Student Lamp Gold Mica Flec Shades 1880's Description *Plume and Atwood Double Student Lamp with matched pair of gold spatter mica flec straight ribbed cased shades with white interior. *The base retains it original bronze patina from the factory.(never polished or lacquered). *The base is in excellent condition with no dents in the brass metal. Applied floral designs accent the fonts and the oil tank. The base and the rim of the tank cover have the hob-nail beading design motif. *The thumb wheels are embossed with the P&A Duplex signature. *The lamp stands 21 1/2" tall to the top of the finial and is 24 1/2" across the shade fitters. *The two matched pair of mica gold spatter shades are in mint condition with no cracks, breaks or flea bites. Very minor roughness on one shade fitter rim, nothing major but mentioned here for accuracy and easily covered by the shade rim. *This lamp was most likely electrified at the factory (in 1890's) and ordered that way by a wealthy client who didn't want to mess with the oil burning feature and wanted the new electric lighting feature. Noted, because the thumb wheels are stationary and do not move a wick. Also noted because the tank had been cut to accommodate the wiring. *Excellent example of a double student lamp with a rather rare pair of shades. *Buyer pays for shipping and insurance. Double boxed for your best protection in transit. 2 boxed, one for the shades and chimneys and one for the frame. *Some History the manufacturer: The Plume & Atwood Manufacturing Company was organized in January, 1869, albeit under a different name. It began as Holmes, Booth and Atwood when Israel Holmes, John C. Booth and Lewis J. Atwood formed a partnership after "defecting" from Holmes, Booth and Haydens. Other principals included Aaron Thomas, George W. Welton, and Burr Tucker. Soon after it's formation, the firm bought the brass mill of the Thomas Manufacturing Company in Thomaston which had originally been organized in 1854 to roll metal for making clock movements. They also purchased the Hayden & Griggs Manufacturing Company, a similar concern in Waterbury. Hiram W. Hayden, an original partner of HB&H, contended that the new company's name matched the existing company's name too closely. A legal battle ensued and Hiram prevailed. In 1871, Holmes, Booth and Atwood became Plume and Atwood Manufacturing Company. The "Plume" was David Scott Plume, the treasurer of the new company.1 The company was incorporated in January, 1880. Plume & Atwood produced a full line of lamps and lamp trimmings. Their lamp lines included ROYAL, PLUMWOOD and NAUGATUCK in table, bracket and hanging versions. They made gas burners, shade ring of all descriptions, filler caps, and just about any brass lamp part you could mention. Their burners included BANNER, a high quality DUPLEX, the MOEHRING and HARVARD burners often associated with finer student lamps, the HORNET, NUTMEG and ACORN burners often found on night lamps, and scores more. The 1906 catalog, depicted below, is packed with seventy-eight pages of lamps and trimmings. Between April 18, 1871 and November 19, 1912, the company was listed as the assignee for at least 62 lighting patents - see the patent table below for details. Lewis J. Atwood, a prolific inventor, dominated the field with 44 patents during this period, a whopping seventy-two percent of P&A's patents! It should be noted that Atwood also had a significant number of patents assigned to Holmes, Booth and Haydens when he worked there - at least fourteen between 1862 and 1870. References Courter, J.W. His titles are a key to understanding the deeper message waiting to be discovered in each painting, and, often have more than one meaning. The mystery of what lies below the surface is one of water’s most fascinating attractions. The same can be said of the paintings of Steve Hanks, where water and its presence have a nomenclature all their own. “Oceans are vast and we are small in comparison,” says Hanks. “When a painting occurs at seaside, often the subjects are contemplating significant passages in their lives. Rivers are on the move and going somewhere, as are the figures in these paintings. Lakes are most often environments of calm water and safety. Harmony is often the overriding theme. Bathed in the glow of a warm sun, the woman in this painting is connecting with nature and the uncomplicated joy of life. Poised and confident she dips her foot beneath the surface, an overture to exploring the unknown.” Although teachers often cited his artistic ability, Steve Hanks’ main interest while growing up around San Francisco was sports. See Steve Hanks talk about the inspiration behind his work at: http://www.greenwichworkshop.com/video/hanks.asp About this piece: "Life has many levels and this painting shows many of them," says artist Steve Hanks. "At the bottom are the people making a living on the street. The next level is the sidewalk, where the couples safely walk the perimeter and share their lives together. The only people on the balcony are an elderly couple who have made it through their life together and are observing everyone else. They have made it to the highest level and I view them with envy and pride. "I was attracted to the wrought iron, the architecture and the overall romance of the city. New Orleans has a character that takes time to absorb." Like the characters who populate it, this lively tribute to one of America's most storied cities will take a lifetime to fully discover and enjoy. Thank you. Jim Duff~ Early River Gallery. My Stores Logo The little farmhouse in Pennsylvania where I grew up was always alive with singing, laughter and a love of the arts. My father, a voice instructor, introduced us to the steady flow of eccentric, larger-than-life characters found in his greatest passion – the dramatic world of the Italian opera. Aida’s rich theme always seemed to be playing in the background as I went in search of a reality I could call my own, escaping into the quiet roar of the singing crickets and song of the meadowlark. I could lose myself in the turquoise twilight magic of a summer evening or breath of sweet fields of winter wheat beneath the rising sliver of a moon. I found my true love and years later found myself longing for the beautiful fields of my childhood, where everything was the way it should be. My passion springs forth through the beauty of the fertile earth, which has always been my real teacher. I began painting full time in 1982, doing my time as a starving artist while raising my young son. I was happy to trade this tragic cliché for the happy success of sell-out gallery shows and award banquets. In 1991, I married maritime artist David Thimgan, and we thrived together. On one late summer afternoon escape, traveling to the Mendocino coast, I discovered the California wine country. I was so happy to have found a place in California that reminded me of my long lost fields of Pennsylvania. I painted my first vineyard scene in 1996 and, as time passed, this interest has taken me to the countryside of Tuscany, where I feel I probably lived in a former lifetime. My Italian opera theme song has never left my heart, and somehow life seems to have come full circle, to connect, again, the passions of my life. *Please note: This brand new pre-release canvas will be arriving at the publisher for shipping mid-to-late July 2008. It is a love story, one that speaks of love in its various stages. You cannot help but wonder how many times our moonwatchers have held hands and shared dreams sorrows as they have watched each season pass and each new moon wax and wane. "Our couple sits quietly with their dogs, gazing out across chapters of their lives. There is the warm and comfortable home that has heard the laughter of children; there is the church where they were married so many years ago. And there in the distance, is 'their' moon. I hope this print can be shared and appreciated by lovers-the moonwatchers-of any age." This beloved work of art from acclaimed painter William S. Phillips, “but my true, enduring love remains my Christian faith, home and family. So it is my pleasure to combine all of it in my work. The historical aviation subjects, I research; the contemporary and nostalgic subjects, I live.” Phillips grew up loving art but never thought he could make it his livelihood. At college he majored in criminology, and he had been accepted into law school when four of his paintings were sold at an airport restaurant. That was all the incentive he needed to begin his work as a fine art painter. Bill Phillips is now the aviation artist of choice for many American heroes and the nostalgic landscape artist of choice for many collectors. Bill’s strengths as a landscape painter are what gave him an edge in the aviation field: respect and reverence for a time and place. When one sees his aviation pieces, thoughts are about the courageous individuals who risked their lives for our freedom. In Bill’s nostalgic works, the viewer understands fully what that freedom is... the precious values that make life worth living. After one of his paintings was presented to King Hussein of Jordan, Phillips was commissioned by the Royal Jordanian Air Force. He developed sixteen major paintings, many of which now hang in the Royal Jordanian Air Force Museum in Amman. The Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum presented a one-man show of Phillips’ work in 1986; he is one of only a few artists to have been so honored. In 1988, Phillips was chosen to be a U.S. Navy combat artist. For his outstanding work, the artist was awarded the Navy’s Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants Association’s Americanism Medal. In 1991, three of Phillips’ works were chosen as part of the top 100 in “Art for the Parks,” the prestigious annual fund-raiser for the National Park Service, and one painting received the “Art History Award” from the National Park Foundation. -

Encouraged by his parents and art teachers, he enrolled at fourteen in New York’s Art Students League, studying first under George Bridgeman and then under Reginald Marsh. After high school graduation, he studied for three years at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute with a major in illustration. Following his studies, McCarthy embarked on his art career as a commercial illustrator in New York City. He painted illustrations for most of the paperback book publishers, magazines, movie companies and advertisements. He created works that became posters for such movies as the James Bond series. Frank McCarthy’s talents were highly sought-after by art directors enabling him to work as a free lance illustrator for many years. His art career spanned over 50 years, beginning with a request for a western cover for a magazine by an art director. He left the world of commercial art in 1968, and began his fine art career after moving to Sedona, Arizona. Frank McCarthy’s dynamic paintings frequently featured the people of the west with a special emphasis on the Plains Indian, mountain men and cavalry that comprised the lore and lure of the Old West. Appropriately entitled the “Dean of Western Action Painters,” Frank McCarthy’s art was unsurpassed for its motion, drama and absolute attention to accuracy and detail. Highly collected and frequently imitated, Frank McCarthy’s works were treasured throughout the world as classic examples of contemporary Western Art. Retrospective showings of Frank McCarthy’s paintings have been held at the Museum of the Southwest, Midland, Texas; the R.W. Norton Museum in Shreveport, La.; the Thomas Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Ok.; and in 1992, at the Cowboy Artist of America Museum (now known as National Center for American Western Art) in Kerrville, Texas. Known for his precise, detailed realism and often complicated designs, Crowley sits at the apex of many a fine art painter's and collector's wish list. Born in Redlands, California, Don Crowley got started in the world of art at such an early age that he couldn’t remember a time when he wasn’t drawing. During his school years in Santa Ana, he read everything he could about art and spent every spare moment developing his skill. Service in the Merchant Marines and the Navy enabled Crowley to enroll in the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles under the G.I. Bill. Five years later, he moved to New York and began a successful career in commercial illustration. After more than twenty years in the Northeast, Crowley felt restricted by the narrow range of his commercial work and began to work more extensively in fine art. In 1973, he accepted an invitation to exhibit his paintings at a gallery in Arizona. He was so taken by the area that he decided to continue his career there. With his family, Crowley settled in the Southwest, where he began forging a relationship with a group of Native Americans. Although he is recognized and respected for many different kinds of paintings, he is best known for his sensitive and skilled portraits of these Apache and Paiute women and children. Crowley visits the San Carlos Reservation annually to continue chronicling the lives of his subjects. “I hope that my work expresses the beauty and dignity of these very special people,” he says. Through Crowley’s work, his collectors have watched his subjects grow over the years. Occasionally you’ll see a rare Don Crowley image of a cowboy or a cattle drive, but what he is best known for are handsome, clear portraits of Native American women and children, not to mention their colorful Pendleton blankets. In fact, long-time collectors of his work may see the same subject as both a girl and woman, wearing the colorful, geometric-patterned blanket that was handed down from generation to generation. In 1995, he was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America and, in his first year, won the CA Gold Medal for Drawing. The following year he was awarded four awards: a Gold Medal for Oil, Silver Medal for Drawing, the CA Award and the Kieckhefer Best in Show Award. With customary dry humor, Crowley termed this accomplishment very encouraging.
