Loudon Botanical Engraving 1841 Camellia Flowers FRAMED Description Loudon Botanical Floral Engraving, 1841, Camellia Reticula PL. 13 Framed Jane Webb Loudon's work The Ladies'Flower-garden of Ornamental Annuals Plants features fine botanical plates with original hand-coloring. The plates featured are from the first edition of her work published in London in 1841 by William Smith. The coloring in this edition is truly superior to later editions. The Ladies' Flower Garden was produced as a series - annual, perennial, bulbous, greenhouse, and wild flowers. The Ornamental Annual Plants features the most recognizable and desirable flowers. *Condition: Excellent, No Foxing or defects. Paper size: 8 5/8" x 11 1/4". Outside framed size: 21" x 23 1/2". *Custom framed in an Italian walnut burl moulding with brass floral inlayed design motif.Triple Museum matted with silk fabric outer mat and double green highlight colors. About this work: Horticultural Transactions These fine botanical steel aquatints were published between 1807-1842 in the Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London series. They were issued in two series consisting of several volumes each. All of these great prints feature exceptional original hand coloring, and high attention to detail allowed by the newly introduced steel engraving plate. Various artists and engravers involved in this collection were W. Hooker, J. Clark, Mrs. Withers, W. Clark, E.D. Smith, and W. Say. Shaw & Nodder Antique Engraving, Haliotis Shell. 715 Description Shaw & Nodder antique engraving, Haliotis Shell. 715 The Tuberculated Haliotis Shell. 715 Information: George Shaw and Frederick Nodder created The Naturalist's Miscellany between 1790 and 1813. The prolific work included detailed engravings of mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, sea life, and botany. The Naturalist's Miscellany sought to advance the knowledge of natural life. It is considered one of the best natural history works of its time. Drawings and descriptions were gathered from explorers and scientists from all over for this expansive work. The work had a particular focus on the fauna and flora of Australia, New Zealand, and the South Seas. Many new, interesting animals were discovered in this period. Each engraving is printed on J Whatman paper. Some of the plates exhibit the Whatman watermark as well. Each plate features beautiful hand-coloring. George Shaw was the author of The Naturalist's Miscellany. He wrote the descriptive text in both English and Latin. Shaw was a doctor, Fellow of the Royal Society, co-founder of the Linnean Society, and a zoologist of the British Museum. He was also the first to publish a scientific description of the platypus which was done in this work. Frederick Nodder illustrated this beautiful work. Nodder was the favored botanical artist of Queen Charlotte. His son, Ralph Nodder, also contributed to the engravings. Frederick's wife, Elizabeth, contributed to the text later in the publication as well.
