  • WW1 Biplane photo and army in Africa photos

    1:26 AM PST, 3/10/2011

This lot consists of an old album with 36 photographs, these date from the first World War. Some of the photos are loose and some are stuck down. The first photo of the airman is small and is stuck in the album, it measures only 2 & 1/4 x 1 & 1/2 inches; but it is a very sharp photo and with the aid of a magnifying glass I can clearly see details of his face/goggles/leather helmet and the gun. It also has a hand written message in ink across the bottom, which we think says - "Down in half an hour Charle." There are other photos of soldiers in Africa, an armoured car, a gun, an army camp, natives, buildings, and camels. Two of the pictures in photo 16 are cut down postcards and have captions written on the back in pencil (see photos 17 & 18), which say "...the new construction line between Salita and (what looks like)Faveta showing a range of mountains ajoining Kilimanjaro - BEA." and "KAR with their Moslem flag before going into action - BEA." Both these images are very faded but I can make out Africans in uniform wearing headdresses. KAR probably refers to the Kings African Rifles and BEA to British East Africa. The album is not complete, some of the album mounts are torn, some photos are stuck in, some photos are faded and have small tears. Please see our other auctions for more vintage photos.
