Former eBay Chief Financial Officer Rajiv Dutta is being remembered by colleagues this week as a man with integrity, compassion and genuine enthusiasm for his work at eBay and other technology companies.

Dutta died on Monday at the age of 49. While at eBay, he was CFO during the company's biggest growth period, and later held positions including executive vice president, president of eBay Marketplaces and the head of PayPal and Skype.

Dutta was "a loved and respected eBay executive," says John Donahoe, eBay's president and CEO, in an e-mail sent to employees Monday. "He left behind many friends when he retired in 2008 after an extraordinary 10-year career with our company."

Dutta died Monday morning from a recurrence of colon cancer. He checked into Stanford University Hospital last week after discovering the disease had returned and spread to different parts of his body, according to news reports.

Donahoe called Dutta "one of the company's most talented and inspirational leaders."

"He was a friend and mentor to many, someone who exemplified eBay's values through his personal touch, integrity and tireless passion for our company and community," Donahoe continues. "His legacy is felt throughout eBay and PayPal."

Alan Lewis, platform manager at Auctiva, worked at eBay during Dutta's tenure there. He remembers Dutta as someone who was "enthusiastic about the company, and genuinely cared about its employees and about the customers who relied on eBay to run their businesses."

"I was very sad to hear of his passing," Lewis adds. "Many of my former eBay co-workers have posted similar sentiments on Facebook. It is clear that he made a big impact in people's lives."

Meg Whitman, eBay's former CEO, worked closely with Dutta for many years and called him "a prince of a guy," noting that people couldn't find a negative thing to say about him.

Fred Anderson, the co-founder of Elevation Partners, a private equity firm that Dutta joined in 2009, added, "Rajiv was a man of the highest integrity, intellect, compassion and energy. Those of us who were lucky enough to know him embraced his beautiful spirit and his incredible enthusiasm for life."
