More than 6,000 Canada Post employees aren't working today in Montreal, the third city where members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers are striking over wage and benefit disputes.

Postal workers are expected to participate in the 24-hour strike, which began at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. This stoppage follows a 48-hour strike by union members in Hamilton, ON, a city six hours southwest of Montreal. The first strike took place in Winnipeg, where workers walked off the job for 24 hours.

Canada Post officials say the rolling strikes will not delay mail delivery significantly. Montreal union President Alain Duguay added that the strikes are meant to cause as little disruption as possible, as they're meant to get the attention of Canada Post, not inconvenience customers.

Deliveries in Hamilton are said to be delayed by a day, though Winnipeg delivery times seem to have been unaffected. However, if the rolling strikes turn into a general strike, mail could be delayed significantly, according to reports.

Union members and Canada Post have been at odds since October, according to reports. The two parties are in disagreement over wages for new employees, a new sick plan the union says is "inferior" and work conditions. Negotiations and discussions between the two organizations are ongoing.
