eBay is among the most innovative companies in the retail business, and in the world, according to business magazine Fast Company.

eBay made the magazine's top 10 list of most innovative retail companies for 2011, coming in at No. 5 behind Groupon, Trader Joe's, Marks & Spencer and Amazon, respectively. Overall, eBay was named as the 22nd most innovative company in the world.

Not surprisingly, Apple ranked No. 1 on the list of most innovative companies in the world, followed by Twitter and Facebook. While Apple took the top overall spot for "dominating the business landscape," Groupon was deemed the most innovative among retailers for "integrating Web and real-time shopping," and "changing consumer behavior," according to the magazine.

eBay stood out "for leading the way in mobile commerce," Fast Company notes. The magazine recognized the online marketplace's commitment to mobile—its mobile app has been downloaded an estimated 15 million times—and called out eBay's efforts in developing apps for fashion, eBay Motors, electronics and home and garden items.

All of the companies on the magazine's list are those that are "nondogmatic" and "willing to scrap conventional ideas," the magazine notes. Starbucks, Shopkick and IKEA were also among the retailers recognized.
